I know I need physical therapy and I have insurance. Can I just call for an appointment?

In most cases we treat patients who are referred by doctors. If you feel you could benefit from physical therapy, call or visit your doctor first and ask for a physical therapy referral to treat your problem. If the doctor doesn't know what type of therapy or therapies will be beneficial for you, it is best for them to write a prescription "physical therapy, evaluate and treat." If we need more specific details written on the prescription, we can request them from your doctor.

If you are a Medicare patient, you must have a current dated prescription from your doctor for physical therapy. Your diagnosis, the treatment requested plus the frequency and duration of the treatment to be given must be included on the prescription.

How long is a typical treatment?

Treatments will vary depending on your particular needs. However a typical treatment is made up of one or more sessions, each approximately one hour long. The number of sessions will be determined after your initial evaluation. Your physical therapist will be able to judge how much treatment time and how many days of treatment you will need.

What does a typical physical therapy treatment session include?

Treatment in physical therapy varies depending on the problem or injury you are being treated for. A typical treatment session may include the use of manual therapy techniques where the therapist uses his or her hands to guide your movements or to loosen up tight muscles and joints. The manual techniques that we specialize in are extremely safe. There are no high velocity "cracks", "pops", or quick "twists" utilized in other forms of "adjustments." Stretching, movement re-education, therapeutic exercise, and patient education are also key components of a physical therapy treatment session. Modalities including ultrasound, phonophoresis, traction, heat and ice, parrafin wax bath, whirlpool and electrical stimulation may also be used as appropriate. Our emphasis is getting you moving correctly and teaching you how to keep yourself healthy for the future.

What types of injuries can be treated by a physical therapist?

We specialize in the treatment of orthopedic and neurological injuries. These include neck and low back pain, shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle and foot injuries, posture problems, post surgical rehabilitation of total knee or hip replacement, rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, and sport or exercise related injuries.

Preparing for your first appointment with a physical therapist:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Bring your insurance card(s) to verify your insurance provider coverage.
  • Bring the prescription for physical therapy from your doctor.
  • Bring a list of the medications you are taking.
  • Bring the results of any diagnosis tests you have had (X-rays, MRI, etc.).
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing that is comfortable for exercising.
  • Allow 90 minutes for your first appointment.

Will my insurance pay for physical therapy?

Virtually every health insurance offers coverage of physical therapy services. However, the amount of coverage varies from policy to policy, so it is best to check your insurance providers handbook or call your insurance company to find out what your covered physical therapy benefit is. Insurance typically pays 50-100% of charges after your deductible is met. You are responsible for the difference.
